TBM for Bheri Babai Diversion Multipurpose Project by COVEC Nepal Arrived on Site and Started Assembling

Date:2017-9-19

In the early morning September 13th, the full section double shield tunnel boring machine (TBM) which is the first in Nepal arrived at the Bheri Babai Diversion Multipurpose Project site after two months of long-distance transport and started assembling.
The brand new double shield TBM used for the project is manufactured by Robbins. The length is 275 meters and the total cost is US $11,106,000. The excavation diameter of the cutter is 5.06 meters. Rapid tunneling can be achieved through free switch between soft soil mode and hard rock mode based on different geological conditions. The assembling work approximately takes more than one month’s time. It’s estimated that the main body of TBM and 7 trolleys will start tunneling on early November, followed by one month to conduct system commissioning. The formal starting of TBM will be on early December.
The arrival of TBM bears significant meaning which will change the construction history of Nepal, being the first to adopt tunnel boring machine. It also lays a solid foundation for the following-up construction works and the future completion of the 12km tunnel. Meanwhile, it will set a model for related projects in Nepal and promote economic and trade cooperation between China and Nepal.
