COVEC and its parent company CREC have 37 member enterprises including 3 Survey & Design Institutes, 1 Engineering Design and Consulting Company, 4 Engineering Machinery Sciences Academies, 1 International Engineering Corporation, 10 Construction Companies and 3 Professional Construction Companies engaged in Bridges, Tunnels and Electrification. There is 280,000 staff, including as many as 110,000 management professionals, 702 technical personnels, 3 fellow members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 7 national masters on survey & design.
COVEC was established in 1991, formerly under Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (MOFTEC), State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC). By 2003, COVEC has gone through strategic reorganization, together with China Railway Engineering Corporation and became its subsidiary mainly in international marketing and businesses. There are standing bodies in 23 countries worldwide, over 1550 projects in highway, airport, port, railway, municipal public engineering, housing, farm irrigation, China financed foreign aid engineering in more than 60 countries and regions in Africa, Middle East, Southeast Asia, South Pacific and Europe. There is also overseas chemical plant, sugar industry joint venture, pharmaceutical factory, textile mill, mineral resources development enterprise and textile pharmaceutical enterprise with exported labor force over 60,000.
CREC has scientific and technological innovation capabilities for construction, and the powerful strength lies in the machinery equipments as well as a range of professional experts and technical personnels. There are large-scale specialized machinery equipments, such as bridge girder erection machines, girder-transporting cars, rail welding machines, catenary constant tension wire-barrows, shield machines, TBM, large gondolas. The technologies and equipments in railway lines, underground engineering, inter-city rails, long tunnels, electrified catenaries and large-scale infrastructures under the deep water have reached a leading level both at home and abroad. Domestic achievements include over 5000 tunnels and bridges for over 3000 kilometers long, 50,000 kilometers long railway, 25,000 kilometers long electric railway contact wire, more than 3000 mega-projects in airport, port, hydropower, urban rail, skyscraper, municipal public engineering. It was also involved in Qinghai-Tibet railway construction, the well-renowned first railway in Tibet plateau. Information-directed construction for tunnels and underground engineering was almost realized. Tunnel and subway design, construction technologies have already been in leading stage in the world.
